And his next book will be on the History of the Cincinnati Twin Sister cannon.

As a native Texan I was raised on the stories of the creation of the Republic of Texas and its subsequent merger into the United States of America. I lived a scant ten miles from the battleground at San Jacinto where Texas won her freedom from Mexico on April 21, 1836. Little did I realize that the eighteen minute battle would ultimately determine the sovereignty of a million square miles of land. What was once Mexican soil became United States soil. The United States achieved its western expansion and become a bi-coastal nation. Because of this the Battle of San Jacinto is considered as one of the most important battles in world history.

Critical to that battle were two small cannon donated by the citizens of Cincinnati, Ohio to the rebels in Texas. Texian General Sam Houston had an untrained army of about nine hundred men and the two donated cannon when he attacked Mexican General and President Antonio Santa Anna de Lopez and his eleven hundred battled hardened, trained troops on the prairie at the confluence of the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou. Santa Anna had one larger caliber cannon and a well-trained cannon crew. But Houston took advantage of the terrain, an army of motivated soldiers intent on revenge and a surprise attack in the afternoon to route the Mexican force onApril 21, 1836. General Santa Anna fled the battlefield but was captured the next day. Shortly afterwards the cannon became known as the "Twin Sisters."

The tale of the Twin Sisters is at best a very interesting story. At worst, the story is confusing because of the many conflicting observations, misidentifications and myths. Myths in Texas history are par for the course. The Twin Sisters arrived in Texas in 1836 and disappeared in 1865. Since then every passionate Texan has been looking for them. Although it has been 150 years since they disappeared, each year someone mounts an expedition that feels confidence they know where the Twin Sisters are. As a friend of mine observed, everyone loves a mystery, so at the end of the story perhaps you will be inspired to be among those that continue to look for the Twin Sisters.

In the meantime you can follow along as the story develops. Read my speech on the Twin Sisters and follow along on my Facebook page, Texas Twin Sister Cannon.
